This was a fun race that I was invited to a couple days before it started. Recently, I’ve become more consistent with my running, and this would be a great test to see where my fitness level was at. I was curious to see what would happen since I haven’t put full effort in for a race in a few years.
I ran this race back in 2019 and remembered it was some parts paved and some parts sandy trail. Since it rained the day before I wasn’t sure how the day of the race would be like. Turns out the weather was nice and cool, and the race route was clear and dry.
There were less than 50 participants for this race and shortly after the race director explained the route, we were off and running. The route was a half mile up and half mile back in a horseshoe shape around a body of water. For the 5k we had to do three out back and for the 10k they had to do six out back runs.
Since there weren’t many people in this race and a good portion were walkers, I felt my confidence go up by passing a few people from the beginning of the race. What I didn’t realize is I was started way too fast and would end up paying for it about halfway through the race.
The turnaround point for each mile was a beautiful view out into the gulf which made being tired a little less tough. I could start to see my pace going slower so all I was doing was focusing on my form and my breathing to get to the next turnaround point until I crossed the finished line.
Once the race was over, there were snacks and medals to choose from on a table. Overall the race director and volunteers were excellent and made the race fun. I would definitely recommend this race for anyone trying to PR or for someone looking for a scenic race.
